graphic for Granite Coast Brewing Co. Over the past year we have dedicated a monthly blog to highlighting either a local nonprofit organization, a local business, or an individual who contributes to the positive culture of our North Shore community.

Recently we have been shining a community spotlight on businesses that are adapting in unique and wonderful ways in order to provide much needed services during this global health crisis.

This month, we take  a closer look at Granite Coast Brewing Co., a craft brewery and taproom at 77 Main Street in Peabody, Massachusetts. They are known for brewing original versions of classic styles of beer from around the world. The brewery has a large variety of rotating styles so that there is always something new coming out and there is something new for everyone to try.

What is Granite Coast Brewing?

Granite Coast Brewing Co., operated by co-owners Jeff Marquis and Rob Dunn, offers original recipes for both classic and underrepresented styles using locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible. Their brewing goal is to try new recipes and introduce new beers every few weeks with at least a few styles for everyone.

Not only do they have a special style, but also a unique history.Jeff and Rob, who met in middle school began their brewing journey in Rob’s kitchen. Over the years the two friends enjoyed sampling beer, traveling, playing cards, and eventually came up with the idea of starting their own brewery. The home-based kitchen eventually became too small for their needs and they upgraded to the garage where they created a one-barrel brew house.

After years of dreaming and planning, the long-time friends opened their own professional brew house called Granite Coast Brewing Co. on Memorial Day weekend in 2019. It quickly became extremely popular!

Adapting to the Pandemic

Not even a year after their grand opening, the coronavirus pandemic struck. The brewery has transitioned to  90% online ordering and a majority of to-go sales. They also introduced their first beer in 16oz cans, and have more planned. They reopened the taproom on July 17th, with pop-ups every day and 14 beers available including some re-releases and their new Red Hot Moon Kentucky Common!

Ever the optimists, the two men used the quarantine opportunity to start canning their beer earlier than planned, and it has been an extremely successful venture so far. You can now find their beer being sold at multiple restaurants and in many package stores.

Even as our region begins to open back up, Granite Coast Brewing Co. will continue offering curbside pickup for the foreseeable future to meet customer’s  needs and  new taproom policies, which will be announced on social media soon.  Please check their website and other social outlets for these policies!
